AppleSearch: Product Details, System Requirements
Copyright 1993, Apple Computer, Inc.
Article Created: 22 March 1993 (Extracted from the Tech Info Library, Apple
Computer, Inc's technical information database on AppleLink.)
TOPIC -----------------------------------------------------------
This article contains AppleSearch product details, system requirements,
and licensing and ordering information.
DISCUSSION ------------------------------------------------------
Client Software
---------------
The Client software provides electronic reporters and newspapers as an
intuitive way to retrieve needed information when it is needed. You create
an AppleSearch reporter to search for information on a specific topic. The
AppleSearch reporter searches all selected information sources on the
AppleSearch server for key words in a query, then quickly provides a list
of documents that are relevant to the query -- ranked with from 1 to 5 stars.
You can choose to view the text of each document, or you can retrieve the
full document in its original format. AppleSearch can display the
reporter's results in a newspaper created automatically, on a regular
basis, and delivered to a specified location on a hard disk. The electronic
reporters can be saved to use again or to share with colleagues.
Server Software
---------------
The Server software has a feature-rich search engine that recognizes and
processes the queries of AppleSearch client users. For each information
source, AppleSearch maintains an index of all potential query terms in the
document and their relationship to each other. You can index the
information source immediately or schedule indexing so that users always
have access to the latest information. The Server software maintains a
database of all reporters, where you can access and use them over a local
network or remotely by using AppleTalk Remote Access.
Indexing
--------
• For each AppleSearch information source, AppleSearch creates an inverted
file of query terms.
• AppleSearch indexes information sources at 10-15MB per hour
(depending on the type of computer used for the server).
• Users can index information sources or schedule indexing to occur
automatically at hourly, daily, or weekly intervals.
• AppleSearch performs index compacting to reorganize the index and
release unused disk space.
Security
--------
• AppleSearch provides password logon to the server.
• Using the security features associated with AppleShare or Macintosh
file sharing, AppleSearch provides users with access privileges to
information sources at the folder and nested folder levels.
Information Sources
-------------------
• An AppleSearch information source is any shared folder on an AppleSearch
server attached to a locally-mounted volume.
• Users can make information available to be searched and retrieved by
dragging document files into shared folders on the server.
• An AppleSearch server can provide access to over 20,000 document files
per server volume.
Query Features
--------------
• Reporters. Immediately or periodically searches and retrieves information
relevant to the search criteria.
• Import Export Reporter. Allows users to share reporters.
• Relevancy ranking. Assigns from one to five stars to each document,
according to its relevance to the search query.
• Related terms. Displays words closely associated with a query term and
allows you to copy and paste them into a search query.
• Term expansion. Searches for variations of the root query term.
• Proximity. Searches for words within a certain number of words.
• Phrase searching. Searches for two or more words next to each other
(proximity of one).
• Wild carding. Searches for part of the search term.
• Query by example. Allows cutting and pasting of a term or phrase from a
document
• Full Boolean operators.
Document Independence
---------------------
Apple's XTND file format translator technology allows AppleSearch users
to view the text of nearly all document types without using the
application that created it. A basic set of translators is included with
AppleSearch server software. Additional translators are available from
third-party developers.
Guest Mode
----------
AppleSearch allows guest users to create reporters for immediate
searching.
Developer's Kits
----------------
The Newspaper Format Kit includes utility routines and the Newspaper
Format Developer's Guide, needed to write software that can read and
write AppleSearch-compatible newspapers.
The Client Developer's Kit is for developers who want to write custom
user interfaces to the AppleSearch server. The API comes in C Library and
AppleEvents versions. The kit includes several header and object files,
developer documentation, a sample application with source code, and a
set of test tools. The kit includes the AppleSearch Newspaper Format
Developer's Kit.
System Requirements
-------------------
To set up an AppleSearch Server, you need:
• An Apple Workgroup Server 60, 80, or 95 (file and print configuration),
a Macintosh Quadra, or a Centris 610 or 650.
• Macintosh System software version 7.0 or later. (If you're using an Apple
Workgroup Server, note that AppleSearch runs in the Macintosh OS
partition of the server operating system.)
• 8MB of memory to run concurrently with AppleShare. (The AppleSearch server
software requires a 4MB partition.)
• AppleSearch Server software.
• Additional XTND translators for document format support other than what
Apple provides
To set up an AppleSearch client, you need:
• Any Macintosh computer with an internal hard disk and at least 4MB of
memory.
• Macintosh system software version 7.0 or later.
• AppleSearch Client software.
To set up a network with AppleSearch you need:
• AppleShare or the Macintosh file-sharing feature. (AppleShare can be
purchased to provide a higher performance configuration that allows a
larger number of users. AppleSearch is compatible with AppleShare 4.0
and AppleShare Pro.)
• AppleTalk software and an AppleTalk network connection (LocalTalk,
EtherTalk, TokenTalk, or AppleTalk Remote Access).
Setup and Configuration
-----------------------
AppleSearch is quick and easy to install. You simply double-click the
Installer icon on your Setup disk, and restart your computer.
Licensing and Ordering Information
----------------------------------
This information will be updated when AppleSearch ships later this year.
